Essential Oils For Horses

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

“The Arabian is one of the most easily recognizable horse breeds in the world. It is also one of the oldest breeds, with archaeological evidence of horses that resemble modern Arabians dating back 4,500 years. Throughout history, Arabian horses spread around the world by both war and trade, used to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance, and strong bones. Today, Arabian bloodlines are found in almost every modern breed of a riding horse.” WIKI

I love horses, I don’t own one but if I did I would want to own an Arabian.  This weekend I spent a day at the  57th Arabian Horse Show which was here in Scottsdale as it is every year.  I always enjoy watching this beautiful breed of horse prancing in the arena. They are so graceful.  I love to see how beautifully adorned they are along with their riders in their costumes. They are gorgeous.

As I become more knowledgeable about  Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils and their advantages I came across evidence showing that these Oils promote health in horses.

It is most interesting that despite their size, horses are sensitive. We would use the same dosage of CPTG essential oils on a horse as for an adult human, less for pregnant mares, Shetlands, and toy breeds.

I cannot guarantee that you will get the same results using oils that are not Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.

My research has been documented and proven only with doTERRA’s CPTG essential oils.

There are certain essential oils that are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) so that some may be ingested internally.

CPTG essential oils are 50-70 times more potent than the dried herb. For instance one drop of our peppermint oil is equal to approximately 28 cups of peppermint tea.  Now that is potent.

I refer to a book called “Modern Essentials” which gives me different applications to use as well as specific doses that I can apply for most symptoms, A to Z.

I wanted to present to you a few of my favorite essential oils that have shown to be beneficial for these manifestions or illnesses, in order to support your horse’s health.

Another way to treat anxiety in horses as well as humans would be to have an essential oil diffuser in the barn and in the office. Aromatherapy will calm, and relax.

Frankincense is one of the oils for Anti-Anxiety, Colitis, Infections, Insect/Snake Bites, Scarring, Tumors, and Warts.

Helichrysum is especially great for Wound Care or Nerve Damage.

Lemon is great for boosting the Immune System and Hoof Strength.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) has been used for Hoof Rot, Lice and Mites.

Our Deep Blue Rub is excellent for Arthritis or Monday Morning Sickness.  After a weekend of training both the trainer and the horse can use our Deep Blue rub, I use it almost every day.

Our On-Guard Blend supports a Healthy Immune System.

Seeing the care that is given to these horses, I believe that using aromatherapy can benefit them greatly.  Becoming versed in the chemical constituents that are present in these oils is why I wanted to talk about their advantages.  Essential oils kill viruses and bacteria because they can penetrate cells to eliminate these pathogens.

It is fascinating that there are natural and alternative ways to help protect these beautiful horses.  We can treat them with this type of oil therapy that does not have the harmful side affects that chemicals from pharmaceuticals can provoke.

Natural plant oils are quickly and cleanly metabolized and do not build up in their systems or ours. Therefore you can reapply as needed.  We always avoid the eye area, but just in case we would flush the eye with milk.

You can use these oils in conjunction with other types of care you are already giving, or you can use these oils instead of pharmaceuticals.  For an example you could use our Digest-Zen blend for treatment of gastric ulcers instead of Omeprazole, this blend of oils can be healthful for your horses.

I believe in alternative health care but at one time or another we all have a need to see a doctor. As we are educating ourselves on how to reinvent our healthcare, we can use CPTG essential oils by themselves or they can be partnered with other treatments that you are giving.  If you are working to prevent illness or a minor issue to start with, you can use essential oils in lieu of pharmaceuticals.

I want to leave with you one more recommendation for a Cool-Down Mist.  In a 16 oz bottle, not plastic, put 6-8 drops of doTerra Peppermint or 6-8 drops of doTerra AromaTouch Blend or 6-8 drops of deTerra Breathe Blend.  Fill the remainder of the bottle with distilled water.  Spray the horse, avoiding the eyes.  Reapply as needed.

I have enjoyed sharing a little bit of wisdom that I have gleaned from studying about CPTG essential oils for horses.  In promoting wellness not only in people but for horses, I have available samples of these oils that I have talked about.  You can contact me at crgeiger@IdealScentsllc.com.

Medicinal Properties In Essential Oils

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Ancient literature shows that the Egyptians were masters at blending aromatic oils, they may have been the first people to discover the healing properties in the plants that produce essential oils.

In 1922 when King Tut’s tomb was opened, they discovered an abundance of alabaster jars that were filled with about 100 gallons of essential oils.

“The Ebers Papyrus medical scroll reveals that Egyptian healers had a remarkably high success rate, treating as many as eighty-one diseases using oils of frankincense, cinnamon, myrrh, rosemary, galbanum, hyssop, cassia, and spikenard often mixed with honey.”  As doctor James L. Geiger, the oil/MD talks about in his book ” Your Doctor’s Natural Guide To A Longer, Healthier Life.”  The Sweet Smell of Success

How are essential oils being integrated into modern medicine to improve patient care?

The chemistry behind therapeutic grade essential oils is being examined by the medical community. Essential oils as Dr. Geiger explained to me “are very versatile, one oil can simultaneously enhance the cellular immune system (increases lymphocytes)  while eradicating infectious organisms.”

A wellness project that was broadcast by  Fox News reported on the study that was done at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville Tennessee. The medical center studied essential oils to see what affect they would have in their emergency room.

The study was done to help decrease stress and help increase energy. They ran the study by placing aromatherapy diffusers around the emergency room, and diffusing them.

The results surprised many of the 100 emergency room staff.

Before the study 41% of the emergency room staff were stressed at work, after diffusing the oils only 3% were stressed at work.

Prior to the study 60% of the emergency room staff were frustrated at work, after the diffusing of the essential oils only 6% were frustrated.

After observing closely the dramatic results from studies using essential oils, many health care providers and medical facilities are looking into how they might integrate essential oils into their private practices and their hospital settings.

Improvement for the work environment and to promote patient care outcomes should be in my opinion a necessary goal of all medical practices.

Wellness institutes like  California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, Ca are offering essential oil aromatherapy as a complimentary medicine approach in their overall medical plan.

A doctor I know has integrated essential oils into his practice, he uses the essential oil of Ginger on his patients in the operating room to avoid post surgery nausea and vomiting.  Dr. James L. Geiger, in his latest book The Sweet Smell of Success “Your Doctor’s Natural Guide to a Longer Healthier Life”, explains the scientific validity of using essential oils as an integrative therapy.

It is my passion to continue educating myself and others on the uses for therapeutic grade essential oils.

Using Essential Oils In Your Home

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Using Essential Oils  In Your Home can be easy and become your way of taking charge and becoming more health conscious.

I have been using essential oils in my home for many years now on a daily basis.  They have made an enormous transformation to our health and wellness.

My education first came when I took a year long course by Jane Buckle Ph.D., RN.

I have continued my education since that time and I am continuing to learn more and to put these precious oils to work.   As I do this, I’m gaining more understanding about their potency, and the chemistry behind these wonderful oils.

The constituents in therapeutic grade essential oils are different from other oils.  These essential oils are pure without contaminants.  I choose these oils for myself, my family, and my friends for two reasons, one is for their quality, meaning potency, and the healing properties that cerified pure oils like Frankincense, Myrrh, Lavender, Lime and Lemon  have on our bodies.

Secondly you get what you pay for so the investment is well worth it, you are investing in your future for healthy aging by using certified pure essential oils.  Have you ever heard the phrase you get what you pay for.  Well that is exactly my point, that is why I choose to use certified pure essential oils for myself, my family, and my friends. Contact me @ crgeiger@idealscentsllc.com for more information on how you can purchase these oils at wholesale prices.

Pure essential oils are very potent therefore you don’t need as much.  The benefits are too numerable to mention all at once.

I recommend the continued education of essential oils.  They have put me in charge of the varying complaints that go on in a household.

Here are a few suggestions: There are many more oils that can be used for these complaints, and I’m just naming a few.

**I use Grapefruit Peel, Lemon Peel, Peppermint Plant, Ginger Root, and Cinnamon Bark essential oils to curb my appetite and help with my metabolism.

**Feed the Brain with these certified pure essential oils  Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus,

**Help your Respiratory system with these therapeutic grade oils: Laurel Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Eucalyptus Leaf/ Stem, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, Cardamom Seed essential oils.

Cleaning and Disinfecting with Essential oils…Use a couple of drops of lemon & melaleuca in a spray bottle to clean bathrooms and kitchens.

There are many uses and recipes for the use of essential oils.  I’m experimenting in the kitchen with oils like cinnamon and clove.   The holidays are coming and we can use these oils to spice up our traditional recipes or have new ones.

I make a Foaming Hand Wash and I use two tablespoons of Dr. Bonner’s unscented Castile Liquid Soap, one tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil and 10 drops of my favorite certified pure essential oils.

I suggest one to two drops of essential oils with  2 tablespoons of a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil this will be beneficial when applying them to the body.   These oils are very potent and more essential oil is not necessary.  It would be better to apply the therapeutic grade essential oils more frequently than to use too much at one time.  Essential oils safety is something I take very seriously.

When applying essential oils to large areas of the body, diluting them with a carrier oil is best so that they are gentle to the skin, the recommendation is to dilute the oils as follows 15%-30% carrier oil is suggested.

There are several ways to use them.  One of the fastest ways to absorb them is when they are applied to the feet because of the large pores.

For Infants dilute one to three drops of essential oils to one tablespoon of a carrier oil.  For Children 2-5 yrs of age one to three drops to one teaspoon of a carrier oil.  The application of these oils for Infants and Children should be on the feet, then add socks or to the back, as well as a diffuser.

One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is to diffuse them throughout the day in my home.

Please note these recommendations are for use with therapeutic grade essential oils.  Please use with caution and keep out of the reach of children.

Healthy Aging for Women and Men with Essential Oils

Friday, February 25th, 2011

I do promote Essential Oils for Healthy Aging because I have seen the results in myself, my family and friends.

Dr. James Geiger the oilMD offers in his book “The Sweet Smell of Success” guidance for the use of “Medical Aromatherapy in the 21st Century”.

“Essential oils are extracted oils from plants that give off aromatic and fragrant smells, they also act to normalize and regulate the systems of the body.”

“Essential oil phytomolecules impact intra-cellular synthesis pathways. Embodied in the chemical constituents found in these plant distillates are the energy and informational building blocks that produce complex emotional and intricate physiological effects in humans and animals.”

“Food is medicine. The FDA classifies essential oils as food. Learning the art and the science of aromatherapy is one avenue to increase health in this revolution of wellness.”

Essential oils are noted for their medicinal properties that  are exceedingly high in ORAC value (oxygen radical absorption capacity) to scavage free radicals associated with disease and aging.

Free radicals are harmful to the body. The human body is composed of many different types of cells.  Free radicals hurt these cells.

In brief “free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, “stealing” its electron. When the “attacked” molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction. Once the process is started, it can cascade, finally resulting in the disruption of a living cell. Of particular importance is that free radical damage accumulates with age.

“Essential oils have crossover properties in clinical areas, for instance, oils of ginger, helichrysum and frankincense are true dual inhibitors of inflammation.”

“Since virtually all pain is due to inflammation, it is particularly dangerous when that inflammation in the human body is stealth enough that it does not cause pain. Because silent inflammation in the human body mostly means silent damage.” In my opinion this could mean silent disease.

In closing I would like to encourage you to make yourself your number one priority on a daily basis and use Essential oils and Essential nutrition. It is extremely important for healthy aging.

The “Wellness Revolution”

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The “Wellness Revolution” many of us may say, finally how come it took so long? I personally have been waiting since the late 60’s.

I am inspired to get as much knowledge as possible to those that are interested in health and wellness. We specifically want to educate about essential juices and essential oils. The oilMD in his book Health Secrets shares the importance of these two essentials for your life. http://www.oilmd.com/ In my opinion they are a daily requirement for healthy living which corresponds to healthy aging. Isn’t this what everyone is looking for, the fountain of youth?

The term anti-aging isn’t true, there isn’t one of us who can say that we aren’t aging. The term that I like to repeat when I educate is healthy aging. Healthy Aging focuses on the whole person, what I mean by that is it is important to realize that we are all aging, yes there is botox and plastic surgery available so that we can look younger, that’s wonderful, but to focus too much on aging in a negative way can create negative energy.

A couple of years ago I was in a seminar with Les Brown.
As a renowned professional speaker, author and television personality, Les Brown has risen to national prominence by delivering a high energy message which tells people how to shake off mediocrity and live up to their greatness. It is a message Les Brown has learned from his own life, and one that he is helping others apply to their lives.

One of the messages that I heard him speak about was “How To Make Yourself Your # 1 Priority.

This had a great impact on my life. So much so that I think I’ve shared it since then probably a dozen or more times.

The plain and simple is that we do need to make ourselves our #1 priority everyday with eating properly, making time to exercise and definitely we need to keep a positive mental attitude with a heart of gratitude

The Healing Benefits of Essential Oils

Sunday, April 4th, 2010
The Healing Benefits of Essential Oils Are Numerable
Aromatherapy has given me solid health benefits in a number of ways ever since the first day I started using them.
I will continue to use them every single day because of their healing benefits. I use them as my perfume, no more synthetic fragrance for me; I want the natural fragrance that will give both a wonderful scent and the healing balm my body deserves.
1.  A health benefit: they are healing after a burn. Tremendous is the word that comes to mind here,  if used immediately no blisters form. E.O’s help with scrapes and cuts too because they heal quicker when used right after the injury.
2. A health benefit: menopause symptoms; anxiety, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, coping with stress, and weight gain.
These aren’t just words, the symptoms that go along with menopause can be detrimental to a women’s health.
For instance waking every night at 3 am wide awake and then having to function the next day, and this happens day after day.
Next the feeling of intense anxiety, all of a sudden, you feel a surge of anxiety even in a relaxed state which lasts anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 minutes, several times a day.
Some women have to get a prescription for tranquilizers to help them cope.
This would be a form of illness in my opinion.  And on top of that what is the chemical from the drug doing to your body.  Wouldn’t it make perfect sense to use nature as your healing balm like therapeutic essential oils instead.
On top of this another symptom of menopause is waking in the morning with such an intense feeling of anxiety as if you had just worked a 16 hour day; this was one of the worst symptoms for me personally.
The anxiety causes many women hundreds of dollars trying to figure out why. But I used essential oils the minute the feeling would come on and it would vanish.
My only regret is that I wish I had known about them when my symptoms first started.  I had a couple of years without them so when I did find them they were a God send.
PMS:  Essential oils help women of all ages with this monthly issue.  Use essential oils on the body after your bath, and during your day as often as you can.  I have found that using them in a diffuser during these difficult days can without a doubt help with these monthly symptoms.
3. A health benefit: Using essential oils during the cold and flu season helped my family; I have three children and using them in a diffuser that will go off every 15 to 30 minutes per hour gives your home a wonderful scent as well as the healing benefits because the oils used get rid of bacteria and virus in the air.
The second benefit here is that the virus or bacteria doesn’t take out the entire family for a day or more and having them miss work or school.
So why spend so much money on commercial products when you can get the healing benefits from cleaning with essential oils, there perks are numerable.  Using them in the home for cleaning removes bacteria, virus and cleans the air.
4.  A health benefit:  Ginger in particular helps with nausea from car sickness and cruise sickness, nausea during pregnancy, high altitude sickness and migraines, it is also an anti-inflammatory.  These are health issues that people seek help from their physicians for and receive medicine  because the symptoms are so extreme.  But nature at its best can do what medicine can’t do, I would call that healing.
5. Essential oils have multiple cross over properties as I’ve mentioned above about ginger.  Lavender also has more than one benefit, it is a pain killer, healing balm to burns and it is an antihistamine to name a few.
When a simple solution would be to frequently use essential oils to heal your body of these disturbing symptoms why not?
Essential oils are healing balms.
How many women go through this; I would definitely say without hesitation that even though menopause is not considered a sickness; the symptoms we get as women can affect us as if they were.
I’m not leaving out men, essential oils have benefits for you too.
For further instructions on the benefits of essential oils buy Dr. James Geiger’s book, “The Sweet Smell of Success” to learn more about the health benefits of essential oils.

Eating the South Beach Diet Way

Monday, March 1st, 2010

A couple of years back I wanted to lose the weight I hadn’t been able to lose since I had my last child, so I decided to check out the South Beach Diet.

The First Phase of this diet is to stop cravings, it is fourteen days without bad carbs, bad fats, baked goods, alcohol, fruit or sugar.  The purpose again is to stop cravings.

The Second Phase you gradually add some foods back in, SB has daily meal plans to help you.  They also have lists of foods that you can enjoy on each phase and foods to avoid.

Phase III is designed for maintenance, and designed to last the rest of your life.   It worked for me.  Unfortunately over a two year period the weight crept back up.  It’s because I was unaware of a few food allergies that I had and adding these foods back in brought the weight back up.  I could probably live with this extra weight for the rest of my life but a few pounds off will definitely be better for healthy aging.

I just read an article from Real Age and just a mere 4 pounds can have huge benefits.

This new study “showed that dropping a mere 4 pounds could cut hypertension risk by 8 percent in middle-aged people and by 11 percent in the 50-plus set.”

“Of course, bigger weight loss had even better blood pressure benefits in the 8-year study. For example, losing 15 pounds reduced high blood pressure risk by 21 percent in the middle-aged folks. Better yet, people 50 to 65 who were 15 pounds thinner enjoyed an even more impressive 29 percent risk reduction. And isn’t it great to know that a realistic mini goal of 4 pounds will still bring big health benefits on the road to 15 lbs.”

I’ve never had to diet so thinking of a diet kinda spooked me, a week without fruit or bread, potatoes, rice and pasta?  As if the world would come crashing down after 14 days without these foods.  It is crazy the way we think isn’t it?

Healthy Aging is my theme here on the Ideal Scents Blog and I have come to the conclusion after starting this new way of eating again that it is truly a great way of eating.  I once heard this and totally agree; eat to live, not live to eat.  Makes perfect sense to me.  Since I eat mostly natural and organic foods anyway it may seem strange that those of us who do eat very healthy may still need to lose weight but we do.  We can still eat too many natural grains or sugar, even if it is honey or organic sugar.  It still adds pounds.

In the South Beach Diet Book it talks about emotional eating, this is a whole other topic but one that is crucial in our thinking if we are going to succeed, so I highly recommend reading the book if you are planning on starting this new phase of your life.

So I started this new plan again 8 days ago and it is remarkable what I have discovered for myself.  I have discovered that the fiber in the vegetables is what fills me up, plus the protein I eat at each meal.  The sweet treats that you can have with this first phase are also new for me.  For the past couple of months I had decided to make my after meal sweet treats fruit, low glycemic fruit, so I’m looking forward to phase two so I can add those back in.

What definitely has helped this time around is the on line support from the South Beach community.  It is fantastic to be able to ask questions and get answers within hours of asking.  You get support from those who have lost any where from 5, 10 or even  100+ pounds.  They help you stay on track with encouragement, experience and great ideas.  It’s a win win situation.

So is the South Beach Diet a diet or a new way of living?  It is definitely a new way to eat.  Eating this way keeps the balance that we need without over doing it.

It has been so successful because people lose weight, stop cravings and learn the healthy way to eat,  live healthy food.

Ideal Scents has always taught that we need to eat properly to live a long healthy life and this support from the South Beach Diet, I guarantee can change your life.

Adding exercise to this program can get you on track for a new you, a brand new life with a healthy outlook.  Free from the diseases that being overweight can bring.

I would consider this a preventative medicine lifestyle.

In his book James Geiger MD, The oilMD discusses Worldwide Wellness, he speaks about obesity.

I like this quote that he mentions in the beginning of chapter three.

“The art of healing comes from nature and not from the physician.  Therefore, the physician must start from nature with an open mind.” Paracelsus

There are many diets out there, the problem I see with some of those diets is that you are eating pre-packaged food, its processed. We need live healthy fresh food daily.

Even with these good fresh foods we still need to use supplements because of the depletion of nutrients in our soil, so it is crucial for preventative living that we eat sensible, not just for satisfaction. Eating for satisfaction will just keep us over weight and in risk of disease. Remember our goal is healthy aging.  Imagine at 80+ enjoying your life with friends and family.

Here’s to healthy aging, a new way of living for more energy, feeling good in your clothes, and the satisfaction that you are in control of your life.
